NIGERIA HAS BEEN RATED AMONG TWENTY NATIONS OF THE WORLD THAT CONTRIBUTE TO EIGHTY PERCENT OF CHILD MORTALITY.
THIS IS ACORDING TO THE ERSTWHILE PRESIDENT OF NUTRITION SOCIETY OF NIGERIA, PROFESSOR IGNATIUS ONIMAWO.
HE MADE THE ASSERTION ON WEDNESDAY 28TH MAY 2014 AT A ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ORGANISED BY NESTLE NUTRITION INSTITUTE AFRICA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NUTRITION SOCIETY OF NIGERIA, HELD AT THE JEVINIK RESTAURANT ISAAC JOHN STREET GRA IKEJA .
ONIMAWO REVEALED THAT SEVENTY PERCENT OF A CHILD BRAIN DEVELOPMENT IS FORMED IN THE WOMB WHILE THE REMAINING THIRTY PERCENT IS COMPLETED WHEN THE CHILD IS BORN.
HE THEREFORE CALLED FOR A CUT DOWN ON CHILD MORTALITY RATE BY ENSURING ADEQUATE COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING FOR CHILDREN, FULL OF THE RIGHT NUTRIENTS LIKE PROTEINS, VITAMINS, CARBOHYDRATES AND OTHERS, FROM SIX MONTHS ARE STRICTLY ADHERED TO.
ONIMAWO WHO STRESSED THAT THE NUTRITION REQUIREMENT OF A GROWING CHILD ARE MUCH HIGHER THAN THAT OF AN ADULT POSITED THAT A LOT OF VEGETABLES, FRUITS AND THE RIGHT NUTRIENTS SHOULD BE ADDED TO A PREGNANT WOMAN’S FOOD..
