UK Set to Offer Technical Support to Kwara's Agriculture Revolution

 

The United Kingdom Trade and Investment has concluded arrangements to offer technical support on agriculture to Kwara State to enable the state meet best practices for entry into the international market.

The Senior Trade Development Manger of UK Trade and Investment, Miss Judy Melifonwu, disclosed this in Ilorin on Monday during an interaction with the State Governor, Alhaji  Abdulfatah Ahmed.

She described Kwara State as the agriculture hub of Nigeria.

According to her: "The UK Trade Investment would ensure good agricultural practices to reduce waste of agriculture produce."

She stated that her team was also interested in helping farmers in the state to meet the standard for export and local markets which will boost non oil earnings.

She added: "We are bringing in expertise from around the world who have had years of experience in the UK doing this thing and so they just want to bring back that experience to Nigeria; and help develop the sector here in Kwara State."

She stressed that the experts in abattoirs in her team will ensure that the wastage in meat is checked as skin hides will be used as leather rather than local delicacy.

Melifonwu noted that through the synergy with the state government and farmers, local capacities would be developed through training and technology transfer, adding that producers and exporters will be connected with customers in the European Union countries while more foreign currency is expected to be earned by local farmers and producers.http://www.thisdaylive.com

The Federal Government of Nigeria has emphasised its resolve to create three million jobs through agriculture over the next five years.

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, stated this in a message at the ongoing Kaduna International Trade Fair.

Wogu, represented by Clement Elu, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, said the National Directorate of Employment would play significant role in actualising government objective.

“Let me assure you that the directorate will step up operations in its agricultural sector interventions through the Rural Employment Promotion Initiative, as well as other job creation programmes.”

According to him, the directorate has contributed immensely to the success of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda.

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to providing necessary support to farmers at the grassroot towards achieving food security in the country.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, made this known in a lecture entitled “Cashew and Nigeria” which he delivered at the official kick off of the 2014 National Cashew Season in Ogun State.

The event, which was held at Joga-Orile in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state, was at the instance of the state’s chapter of the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN).
Adesina, who spoke through the state Director of the ministry, Mr Olumuyiwa Akinsola, advocated the need for cashew farmers to be introduced to new methods of planting and processing crops that would ultimately attract young farmers.
By this, the minister opined that the country would surpass its records in cashew production in past years.

     
He disclosed that the ceremony was aimed at enabling farmers, traders, exporters, processors and cashew consumers enjoy adequate supply of the produce in its season.
According to him, “I want to assure you that as government, we will not relent in our efforts at providing necessary support to farmers at the grassroots to boost food production in this country.
“I think cashew farmers must be more enlightened on the need for them to introduce new measures to the planting and processing of the crop to attract young farmers.”
Adesina stated that Joga-Orile and Imasayi communities in the state have always been producing the best quality of cashew in the country.http://tribune.com.ng.

Cooking meat 'may be dementia risk'

Browning meat in the oven, grill or frying pan produces chemicals which may increase the risk of developing dementia, US researchers suggest.

This according to a BBC health report.

Advanced glycation end (AGE) products have been linked to diseases such as type-2 diabetes.
Mice fed a high-AGEs diet had a build-up of dangerous proteins in the brain and impaired cognitive function.
Experts said the results were "compelling" but did not provide "definitive answers".
AGEs are formed when proteins or fats react with sugar. This can happen naturally and during the cooking process.
Researchers at the Icahn school of medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York, tested the effect of AGEs on mice and people.

Scientists query health risk of food package chemicals

Scientists say "far too little" is known about the health risks of chemicals used in food packaging, and some could cause cancer. 

According to them, research is therefore  needed to understand the effect on the human body and embryonic development of at least 4,000 chemicals used in packaging.
 

The scientists warned that links between packaging and obesity, diabetes and neurological diseases need to be explored.

But critics have said that the call is alarmist.

Scientists Jane Muncke, John Peterson Myers, Martin Scheringer and Miquel Porta called for an investigation into the health risks of food packaging in a commentary piece published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health

A Pizza Hut in US has been shut down after its manager was caught on surveillance video peeing in the sink. Just take a look at this picture!!!!!

A West Virginia Pizza Hut has been shut down after the manager was caught on surveillance video peeing in the sink used to wash cooking utensils. Local media reports that the Mingo County health department has ordered the fast-food restaurant, Pizza Hut Corp., in the town of Charleston to shut down following the release of the disgusting surveillance video.  
Wowktv.com reports that a sign has been placed on the Pizza Hut's front door saying the restaurant has been shut down because of "conditions within the establishment constituting a substantial hazard to the public health."
City health officials say the restaurant will remain closed until it is thoroughly cleaned and there are reassurances of safeguards in place, which could take up to several weeks.

Top chefs in France crack down on ‘food porn’

Two Michelin-starred French chefs are cracking down on customers who take photographs of their food, it's been reported.
Gilles Goujon, who runs the three-starred L'Auberge du vieux puits restaurant in Fontjoncouse in southern France, says it is poor etiquette to take photos of food, and more importantly, every time his creations appear on social networks it "takes away the surprise, and a little bit of my intellectual property", news website France TV Info reports.
Another chef, Alexandre Gauthier of the Grenouillere restaurant in the northern French town of La Madelaine-sous-Montreuil, has gone as far as to add a "no cameras" logo to his menu - although photography isn't strictly banned there.
Gauthier lamented the fact that customers now take pictures of the food rather than the people they are dining with. "Before, they were pictures of family, grandmother, and now we take pictures of food… We tweet, we like, we respond to comments, and the dish is cold."
But not all fine dining establishments take the same view - some have even been known to offer food photography courses.
